Getaway 04:08
GETAWAY (Dennis - Bergey) We’ll meet up in the mezzanine Stashed tools to get away clean Arrive apart, leave together I’ll check the coats And you check the weather You like to touch things not your own And maybe like to take them home Signals, whistles and communique Well timed diversion Get to our getaway Chorus: Getaway Let’s getaway Get to the car and we’ll be clear Let’s getaway So I memorized the layout You had to see how it played out While I bypassed the alarms You gathered intel Deploying your tested charms This is just a heist in your mind But it's taking up all my time Watching you chat up the quests I saw you touching him As I’m flirting with arrest (Chorus) I only see you on the job Though we have no intent to rob Practice for the ultimate score I can’t reach you This ain’t no fun no more Tropical island movie cliché Single chair no one got paid Getaway Getaway Getaway

Held 03:34
HELD (Dennis - Bergey) I’ve been held I’ve been captured I’ve been healed But still fractured He has you and she has me No way there that I can see Nothing tragic can’t use magic Wait it out and we’ll be free I’ve been pushed I’ve been foisted I’ve been lifted I’m not trusted I’ve been cuffed I’ve been chided I’ve been coddled But still guided I’m in love and you may be Figure out if we agree Glad you asked if I’m OK Things starting to go my way I’ve been held I’ve been captured I’ve been held He has you and she has me No way there that I can see Nothing tragic can’t use magic Wait it out and we’ll be free
3.
MAD HATTER YOU (Dennis - Bergey) I was found holding a mirror up to a Once living and breathing love that was mine alone I took a pulse and diagnosed it was safe To attend to other matters Found myself swimming in a reflecting pool When I saw that I was alone where once I saw you Shafts of light from above cut through the water Oh my how they shattered I’ll set a saucer put a price on your head have some tea Mad Hatter you I’ll Mad Hatter you Mad Hatter you Jealousy wrapped around me as I stepped out My footsteps steamed behind me as I ran in Cold recollections how I drove you to him I could not be sadder I was found holding a mirror up to a Once living and breathing love that was mine alone I took a pulse and diagnosed it was safe To attend to other matters I’ll set a saucer put a price on your head have some tea Mad Hatter you Mad Hatter you Mad Hatter you Mad Hatter you Mad Hatter you Mad Hatter you
4.
My Economy 03:08
MY ECONOMY (Dennis - Bergey) I’m cashing in A parley well played The rainbows end Sure to be upended I’m well aware Of the penalties If I dip below You will withdraw me Chorus: You’re so convinced to shop Not afraid to charge it to me I can’t get you to stop For the sake of my economy Draw down accounts Pick up a little work Venture to guess And I’m back in it (Chorus) Can’t treat you to The things I want to You bleed me dry Restrictions apply When times are tight I have a capital idea No clothes doesn’t mean Not a closer You’re so convinced to shop Not afraid to stick it to me I can’t get you to stop For the sake of my economy
5.
IN THE MAKING (Dennis - Bergey) Don't mind if I make you laugh Talk too loud in front of staff Sounds like something in the making Make a list of topics to touch upon Scratch the surface by the time I am gone Thought it best that you should give me some space But I was hoping you would miss my face Don’t care if we miss a day Make it up some other way Sounds like something in the making Thanks a lot for trying to squeeze me in Catch a glimpse at a scheduled function Too much contact bound to give it away Getting closer gets us close to that day It’s been lovely knowing you Told you that I would grow on you Must be a love in the making Funny watching me try to be so smooth Hesitate we guess who’ll make the first move Sure some people notice I could care less Who trips up first it is anyone’s guess
6.
Last In-Kind 02:56
LAST IN-KIND (Dennis - Bergey) I’m looking at you Through tempered glass I helped you through So many troubled times I did so much for you You paid me no mind This is my last kiss This is my last in-kind I’m putting up shelves A lovely view I could have used A little help from you I did so much for you You paid me no mind This is my last kiss This is my last in-kind This is my last kiss This is my last in-kind I‘m catching a glimpse A new screen door I’m nothing new An original floor I’m looking at you Through tempered glass I helped you through So many troubled times I did so much for you You paid me no mind This is my last kiss This is my last in-kind
7.
PICK OUT A COLOR (Dennis - Bergey) Thank you for your love Your tender kiss and cold embraces Thank you for the time You kept me in your good graces I appreciate all the things you let me try Considerations in such short supply You let the world know I was a lucky guy Chorus: Pick out a color Something meant to compliment me Pick out a color I’ll have it sent up; it’s on me Don’t push me too far I can cut you off more ways than one Get the goddamned car Sunny boy I’ll tell you when I’m done Thank you for the hope Means to an end you once gave me Thank you for a glimpse A future you almost saved me We’ll bury that monkey some other day Call up the gang when we want to play A guest-less party makes it easy to stay Chorus Don’t push me too far I can cut you off more ways than one Get the goddamned car Sunny boy I’ll tell you when I’m done Chorus Don’t push me too far Don’t push me . . . Thank you for your love . . .
8.
I'VE DONE THAT (Dennis - Bergey) Had way too much Said too little Didn’t ask it Said the wrong thing Spoke up too soon Missed the punch line Missed the front step Kicked it up stairs Hugged the lamp post Punched the back wall Put my feet up Put the host down Kept quiet about too many things I've done that Learned very little from my mistakes I've done that Didn't sign up Wrote in pencil Tried to relax Stayed up too long Slept with shoes on Slept well past noon Left the light on Pushed the plate back Used a hard laugh Made up for it Missed the answer Missed the payment Jumped from the slide Jumped the hedge row Asked for seconds Made a comment Told a story Kissed the waitress Left things undone when I shouldn't have I've done that Made bad use of my time today I've done that Stopped the good flow Dropped the flashlight Smelled disaster Tried to break up Made the headlines Touched the painting Fell in stickers Missed the question Missed the deadline Missed the main point Many visits On the wrong floor No impression I was left there Kept to myself Didn’t like me Kept quiet about too many things I've done that Learned very little from my mistakes I've done that
9.
YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE (Dennis - Bergey) It’s always young hearts that seem to break There’s only so much that they can take We’d kneel down on the floor to dance Not knowing this would be our last chance You should have been there See me at my best You should have been there Along with the rest You should have been there See me at my best You should have been there Along with the rest I’m guessing young minds don’t think ahead Risky behavior they could end up dead You saw me talking across the hall You got mad nothing said at all You should have been there You were never around You should have been there When I was leaving town You should have been there You were never around You should have been there When I was leaving town They say young lives they get the blame Why not then they all act the same We got together not to begin We never saw each other again
10.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MAN (Dennis - Bergey) They’ve raised my hackles I’ve got my hunches Suspicion has a driver We’re meeting under the bridge And we’ll talk it over Make our decision But don’t you try it And don’t you buy it And don’t you think it You don’t know how I’m going to take you down I’m the Neighborhood Watchman Not the Neighborhood clown I’ve punched my timecard I’ve got my limits The angels take the back seat We’re meeting under the bridge And we’ll talk it over Make our decision But don’t you try it And don’t you buy it And don’t you think it I don’t know how I may react to gun play I’m the Neighborhood Watchman Not the Neighborhood stray
11.
Get Better 04:17
GET BETTER (Dennis - Bergey) Don’t think I haven’t seen you trying to mend your fences Now what’s it gonna take for you to come to my senses Didn’t want to start anything make you feel ill-at-ease But I don’t want to listen to your insecurities When you said you didn’t want to be seen hanging around with me The things that I do let you in on all that we could be Chorus: I’m gotta break from you Never been together Need to stop thinking about you I’ve got to get better You know this boy is after you can’t you see him running Heard we’re a mixed-matched pair only because you are stunning Now if you want to say it you really should say it now Ask around I’m sure one of your friends they can tell you how I can think what I want and not have to watch what I say Really want to see you but better not give in today (Chorus) Pretty girls like you always saying what you want to say What I have to give you, you can’t get any other way Did it occur to you that I was trying to save you Positive outlook on life you admit that I gave you When I’m gone I’m gone that’s something you might want to know Take all that I give you the moment that you let me go (Chorus)
12.
POLITICIAN (YOU’RE A) (Dennis - Bergey) Stop! Your campaigning Stop! Your support's waning Stop! Politicking Stop! Nothin’ is stickin’ You're a politician with a mission You're a politician with a vision Stop! What you're eating Stop! Check the seating Stop! All that kissing Stop! Think what you're missing You're a politician with protocol You're a politician got photo wall Stop! Your fund raising Stop! Lady chasing Stop! You’re ideal Stop! No appeal You're a politician inflatable You're a politician that’s debatable You're a politician knows no defeat You're a politician that’s hard to meet You're the hard-liner who won’t play no ball You're forgettable got no recall You're a politician with a mission You're a politician with a vision Stop! Your campaigning Stop! We think your gaining Stop! Politicking Stop! Your hair won’t thicken You're a politician no position You're a politician with conviction
13.
YOU'LL FIND IT (Dennis - Bergey) I’d feel bad if I came out and said it You'd feel better if somewhere you read it The trick to a happy life can’t be told It’s always here with me so grab ahold Chorus: You'll find, you'll find it You'll find, you'll find it You'll find, you'll find it Now that we've figured out what you're looking for I'd feel bad if I came out and told ya That’s not a line that someone has sold ya Safety in my arms it cannot be bought You can’t deny it see how hard I fought (chorus) Every chance that we ever had Sometimes came with a little sad So it seems you could have your pick Glad that I somehow made it stick Can't imagine why we would not Be so right in all that we’ve got I'd feel bad if I failed to mention There's better ways to relieve this tension The path to us may be hard to travel One wrong word and it could all unravel (chorus) Tell me things that you’ve never felt Places where you may need my help An empty heart that could use my touch Tell me now I don’t ask for much Last chance for you to take this ride And for me to be by your side

about

Although Kevin Dennis & I ceased recording as a duo in 1989, we continued to write songs together regardless of the prospect of a Rank Amateurs reunion or not. Over the next 30-plus-years, Kevin recorded nearly 20 CDs as The Kevins (and with others) and I had the great honor of him covering or introducing no less than 25 songs written with or by your favorite artist. Me! STRANGE ANIMALS highlights just 15 examples of a, hopefully, never ending collaboration. As the Rank Amateurs always suggested: PLAY IT LOUDER THAN THAT!!!!

about

Andrew Bergey Denver, Colorado

After fronting the Oklahoma alt-rockers Rank Amateurs, Andrew Bergey moved to Colorado and started releasing solo albums in 2011. His clever, quirky, and surreal songs have forged “standard” rock albums, a bubblegum album, a children’s album, a premature anthology, and a cover album of his own songs! Why not? Andrew’s albums are always unexpected, experimental, and ear-wormingly entertaining! ... more
